The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church was founded by St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, who came to India in A.D. 52.
The present church uses the liturgy of West Syria. The faith of the Orthodox Church was established by the three Ecumenical Councils of Nicea, Constantinople and Ephesus.
The Indian Orthodox church is in communion with the other Oriental Orthodox churches. In particular, the Antiochene, Alexandrian, Eritrean and Ethiopian churches. The Indian Orthodox church also has a good ecumenical relationship with the Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Protestant Churches.
The church currently has more than 2 million faithful Indian Orthodox members with 24 dioceses.
